Metric Conversation

In this chapter we’re going to explore how to convert between different units. We shall explore how to convert length units such as mm, cm, m and km, and then volume such as ml, cl, l and lastly mass such as grams and kilograms.

Converting length

Firstly let’s look at converting the height of the man below;

ex: The above man is 160 cm tall.

  • How tall is he in metres (m)?
  • How tall is he in millimetres (mm)?

Centimetres into Metres

First let’s convert his height from cm to m.
The conversation factor to between metres (m) and centimetres (cm) is:

If 100cm is 1m how many metres are there in 160cm. To find out how many metres there are in a centimetre we divide the centimetres by the metres and the reverse if want to find metres so;

Centimetres into millimetres (m)

The conversation factor for centimetres and millimetres is:

This must mean that the man is 160 lots of 100mm since he is 160cm tall, therefore:

Kilometres into miles

In this example we’re going to explore the conversation between kilometres and miles; Suppose the distance between Chester and London is 92,400m.

  • How many kilometres is this distance?

The conversation factor between m and km is;

To find out how many 1000m’s there are in 92,400m we must divide 92,400m by 1000m, so;

That is 57.4 miles.
